Saxony Extends Rules for Overnighting in National Park - Saxony enforces permanent camping ban to protect Elbe Sandstone wildlife
Saxony has made a permanent camping ban in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains National Park. The decision follows a temporary measure first introduced in 2022 to protect wildlife and reduce wildfire risks. Officials say the move will help safeguard rare bird species and natural habitats.
The ban was originally put in place to shield peregrine falcons, eagle owls, and black storks during their breeding seasons. It also aimed to lower the risk of wildfires in the park’s fragile ecosystems. Now, the restriction will stay in force every year from February through June 15.
The permanent ban means stricter controls during critical breeding periods. Visitors must now plan overnight stays around the restricted months. Authorities will continue monitoring the impact on wildlife and fire safety in the coming years.
