Snow and Ice: Saxony Prepares for Winter Storm - Saxony braces for extreme winter storm with snow and freeze warnings
Severe winter weather is set to hit Saxony on Friday, bringing heavy snow, freeze warning, and gale-force winds. Authorities have warned of hazardous conditions, with up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow expected across the region. Schools, transport networks and public services are preparing for disruption as temperatures plummet below freezing.
The forecast predicts strong winds that could form deep snowdrifts, while freezing rain may create icy surfaces below 800 metres. Saxony’s highway maintenance teams are on standby, with over 700 workers ready to provide 24-hour winter road services. The Autobahn GmbH des Bundes (Niederlassung Ost), responsible for clearing snow and ice on more than 3,000 kilometres of federal motorways, will lead operations on major routes.
Schools in Saxony will decide individually whether to close, leaving parents to ensure their children’s safe travel. Meanwhile, Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports have their own winter operations crews equipped with specialist machinery to keep runways clear. In Dresden, all scheduled funerals will go ahead as planned on Friday. However, officials may close cemeteries if falling branches pose a risk to visitors.
The extreme weather is likely to cause travel delays and dangerous road conditions. Residents are advised to check for updates on school closures and transport services. Emergency teams remain on high alert as the region braces for the worst of the winter storm.
