Saxony's Wind Energy Revolution Gains Momentum
Shelling out approvals for more wind turbines than in the entire last year, Saxony's wind energy expansion shows no signs of slowing down. With nine months still left to go, the state has already ticked off 24 new wind turbines, yielding an impressive 140 megawatts, as reported by Saxony's Energy Ministry in Dresden. To add to the impressive statistic, 85 more wind turbines, holding a combined capacity of 481 megawatts, are now making their way through the approval process.
To put that into perspective, a mere 20 plants, totaling 101 megawatts, were given the green light for construction during the entire previous year.
This refreshing breakthrough in renewable energy sees far-reaching implications. Energy Minister Wolfram Günther, an ardent Green supporter, hails this latest milestone: "From a brown coal state, where every new wind turbine sometimes stirred up controversy, Saxony has metamorphosed into a climate-neutral energy and industrial powerhouse."
According to recent reports from the specialist agency for onshore wind energy, the number of operational wind turbines in Saxony has seen a marginal decrease in the first nine months of the year. However, an upwards trend in approved wind turbine permits remains evident. The agency's figures reveal a rise in new turbine permits, despite a slight drop in operational turbines, with four new wind turbines entering the game and thirteen retiring, respectively.
Amidst this promising growth, the significance of renewable energy sources is undeniable. Wind farms sprouting across Saxony not only help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also contribute to the combating of climate change. The ambitious goal of converting Saxony into a climate-neutral energy and industrial state can only be achieved through a determined shift away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable resourcest.

Enrichment Data:
- Rising Approval Rates: Theobserver reports that the recent upsurge in wind energy approval requests in Saxony has been met with unyielding support from officials, largely due to the state's desire to meet its renewable energy targets and combat climate change.
- Enercon Turbine Project: Notable report on the serial commissioning of Enercon turbines in Mittelherwigsdorf, Saxony, under the auspices of Energiequelle GmbH. This striking repowering project saw three old turbines replaced with three new Enercon E-138 models, effectively magnifying electricity generation capabilities by six times. With the new turbines capable of providing enough juice for approximately 11,000 households, the site's renewable energy credentials have been drastically elevated.
- Permits for New Wind Farms: In addition to the thriving Mittelherwigsdorf project, Energiequelle GmbH has procured the necessary permits to construct two new wind farms in Szasony: one in Lüben and one in Minden. The projects entail the installation of eight turbines with a combined capacity of 38.4 MW, successfully ensuring a sustainable energy future for their respective locales.
- Transition to Renewable Energy: The spike in wind turbine approvals signifies a continuous push across Europe to embrace renewable energy sources in a bid to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and shift decisively away from fossil fuels.
