Biodiesel production in Saxony-Anhalt increases by 3.6 percent - Saxony-Anhalt's Biodiesel Production Hits Record High, Verbio Boosts Output Despite Challenges
Biodiesel production in Saxony-Anhalt has seen a steady increase over the years. In 2023, the region produced 671,263 tons. This figure rose to around 695,700 tons in 2024, marking a 3.6 percent increase. Verbio, a key player in the region, has also boosted production to record levels despite market challenges.
Verbio's facilities in Saxony-Anhalt, particularly in Zörbig and Bitterfeld, have significantly contributed to the region's biodiesel production. The company's overall production of biodiesel and bioethanol in Germany reached over 1.2 million tons in 2024. Despite a loss of 137.9 million euros in the last fiscal year due to declining prices and reduced profit margins, Verbio expects a significant recovery in the current fiscal year 2025/26.
Since 2014, biodiesel production in Saxony-Anhalt has grown by about a third, from around 516,700 tons to nearly 696,000 tons. This growth is set to continue with the construction of a new plant in Bitterfeld. Scheduled to start production in 2026, this plant will manufacture around 60,000 tons of renewable products for the chemical industry annually.
Biodiesel production in Saxony-Anhalt continues to rise, with Verbio's significant contributions and expansion plans. Despite recent losses, the company remains optimistic about the current fiscal year. The region's biodiesel production capacity is expected to further increase with the upcoming Bitterfeld plant.
