Fewer buildings demolished or repurposed in Saxony-Anhalt - Saxony-Anhalt sees sharp decline in building demolitions and conversions in 2024

Fewer buildings were demolished or converted in Saxony-Anhalt last year. Official figures show 525 properties were affected in 2024, marking a 7.7% drop compared to the previous year. This decline continues a longer trend, with demolitions and conversions falling by 35.6% since 2020. Most of the buildings removed or repurposed last year dated from before 1919 or were built between 1949 and 1978.

Not all regions saw the same levels of building activity. The Harz district recorded 63 demolitions, while Salzlandkreis had 72—both above the state average. However, no specific cities or towns were highlighted as particularly affected. The total floor area lost or altered in 2024 reached around 195,400 square metres.

The latest data confirms a steady reduction in building demolitions and conversions across Saxony-Anhalt. With fewer older properties being removed each year, the overall floor area affected has also shrunk. The trend reflects broader changes in how the state manages its building stock.
