DWD warns of hurricane winds on the Brocken - Saxony-Anhalt battles extreme winter storms on New Year’s Day

Saxony-Anhalt is bracing for harsh winter conditions as the new year begins. Heavy snow, icy roads, and powerful winds have prompted weather warnings across the region.

The German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued temporary alerts for Saxony-Anhalt. Strong winds and snowfall are already affecting parts of the state on New Year’s Day. Gusts of 50 to 75 kilometres per hour are expected in many areas.

High-altitude regions face even more extreme conditions. The Brocken, in the Harz Mountains, has recorded hurricane-force gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour. Temperatures above 400 metres in the Harz will stay below freezing, ensuring persistent icy veins. Snowfall is also intensifying. Up to 15 centimetres of fresh snow is forecast in the Harz Mountains by Friday morning. The combination of snow, wind, and freezing temperatures is likely to create hazardous travel conditions.

The severe weather warnings remain in place for Saxony-Anhalt. Residents and travellers should prepare for difficult conditions, including icy roads and reduced visibility. Authorities advise caution when venturing outside during this period.
