Germany and Deutsche Bahn aim to make public transport more attractive - Saxony-Anhalt and Deutsche Bahn launch €176 million station upgrade plan

Saxony-Anhalt and Deutsche Bahn are teaming up to upgrade train stations across the region. The projects will improve accessibility and boost capacity, aiming to make public transport a more appealing choice for travellers.

The collaboration builds on earlier successes from Saxony-Anhalt's Bahnhofsprogramm. In recent years, this initiative has already delivered new stations in Bernburg and Stendal, alongside platform upgrades at other locations. Those renovations included lifts, ramps for wheelchair users, and tactile guidance systems for visually impaired passengers. Waiting areas were also modernised with better seating, lighting, and signage, while platforms were extended to handle longer trains.

Now, fresh funding of €131 million has been set aside for further improvements between 2020 and 2029. An extra €45 million will follow in 2030 and 2031. Current projects include renovating an underpass and a platform in Biederitz, as well as building a new underpass in Angersdorf.

The upgrades are designed to make bus and rail travel more convenient, particularly in rural areas. By expanding station capacity and accessibility, officials hope to persuade more residents to leave their cars behind and opt for public transport instead.
