Saxon Left elects fresh leadership team
A fresh duo steps up as leaders of the Left party in Saxony
Swinging into the spotlight as the new powerhouse in Saxony, Anja Eichhorn and Marco Böhme have taken charge as the chairpersons of the Local Left party. Their victory was decided at the party conference held in Leipzig, where they bested their contenders, Marika Tandler-Walenta and Silvio Lang.
Previously serving as the deputy chair and member of the state parliament, respectively, Eichhorn and Böhme united in their quest for leadership. Addressing the crowd following their triumph, the art historian and native of Zwickau district, Anja Eichhorn, thanked her predecessors Susanne Schaper and Stefan Hartmann. "They've handed over the reins during a period of growth for the Left in Saxony," she declared. "Our challenge will be to keep the unity and drive of the recent months intact."
Fuelled by determination and ambition, Marco Böhme from Leipzig echoed these sentiments, declaring, "The Left in Saxony is back in action! We need a strong social force in this country."
Time for fresh faces: The end of Schaper and Hartmann's tenure
After a six-year tenure as leaders of the Left, Susanne Schaper and Stefan Hartmann chose not to seek re-election, opting instead to focus on their roles as heads of the state parliament faction. "The past six years were by no means a walk in the park," Schaper acknowledged, reflecting on the challenges posed by the Coronavirus pandemic, the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and the departure of BSW from the Left. Despite these hardships, she maintained, "We've managed to pull through, and that's saying something." The torch has now been passed to Eichhorn and Böhme, who are tasked with carrying the momentum forward, ensuring a continued and permanent success for the Left in Saxony. Their ultimate goal is to contribute to the essential organizational and thematic renewal within their state association and the national party.
