The New Leaders of the Saxon Left Party Take the Reins

Newcomers Elevated on Saxon Left Executive Committee - Saxon Left Adopts Fresh Leadership Team

Embrace the vibe, folks! Anja Eichhorn and Marco Böhme, a dynamic duo, have been elected as the fresh faces steering the Saxon Left Party. The announcement was made at the party conference in Leipzig, ousting Susanne Schaper and Stefan Hartmann from their positions.

In a heartfelt speech, Eichhorn – the previous deputy chair and an art historian hailing from Zwickau – expressed gratitude towards Schaper and Hartmann, acknowledging their pivotal roles during a time of growth for the Saxon Left. She emphasized their mission: "Our task will be to continue the unity and energy of the past months."

Böhme, a native of Leipzig, echoed Eichhorn's sentiments, pointing out the need for a social force within the state. This energetic pair defeated Marika Tändler-Walenta and Silvio Lang, former state parliamentarians, in a tightly contested election.

With six years in office, Schaper and Hartmann chose not to seek re-election. Instead, they plan to focus on their roles as chairs of the state parliament faction. Schaper, in her reflections, spoke about the challenging years encompassing the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the secession of the BSW from the Left. Through it all, she believes their successors must now make the gains permanent and contribute to the necessary structural and content renewal within the party.

Under Hartmann and Schaper's leadership, the membership of the state association surged from around 5,000 to an impressive 11,000. As of the federal election in February, the Left Party surpassed the CDU with nearly 9,500 members and is currently the party with the most members in Saxony.

In light of the election of the new leaders, discussions surrounding policy and legislation are expected to expand, particularly in relation to the protection of workers from risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. This shift in leadership also stirs interest in the broader world of politics and general news, as the Saxon Left Party prepares to tackle challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and the secession of the BSW from the Left, with the aim of making the gains permanent.
