Saved Seafarers off the Coast of Fehmarn
In a daring rescue operation, volunteers from the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) saved a sailor west of the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn. The sailor was in distress due to a rudder malfunction, and his boat had drifted onto a heavily trafficked shipping lane.
The DGzRS vessel involved in the operation was the "Albatros", one of the largest and most advanced search and rescue vessels in the DGzRS fleet. Based at the DGzRS station in Cuxhaven, the "Albatros" is equipped with a helicopter deck for air operations.
The boat was drifting in six to seven-meter waves and strong winds when the "Albatros" was deployed due to the critical situation of the sailor and the boat's location. The "Albatros" crew braved the rough sea conditions to tow the disabled boat to safety.
Upon reaching the sailor, the "Albatros" crew provided first aid before transferring him to a hospital for further medical treatment. Regrettably, the sailor's boat was severely damaged during the rescue operation.
Rescue crews from the Fehmarn station continued to tow the damaged boat to safety, and it was eventually brought into harbour. After completing the rescue operation, the "Albatros" returned to its station.
The DGzRS reported the incident, highlighting the importance of their work in ensuring the safety of those at sea. The brave actions of the "Albatros" crew once again underscore the vital role of the DGzRS in the Baltic Sea.
