Saudi Arabia eyes Ukrainian anti-drone tech to counter Iranian threats
Saudi Arabia is exploring a potential deal to integrate Ukrainian anti-drone technology into its air defences. The move could reduce the kingdom's reliance on costly U.S.-made Patriot systems. Talks come as Iranian-made drones increasingly target Saudi oil facilities.
Ukraine has developed expertise in countering Shahed-type drones, which Iran-backed groups frequently deploy against Saudi infrastructure. Riyadh now sees Ukrainian interceptor missiles as a cheaper way to strengthen its layered defences.
No formal military cooperation or arms transfers between the two countries have taken place in recent years. But the growing threat from Iranian weapons in the Middle East has pushed Saudi Arabia to seek new solutions.
A deal would also mark the first military-technical alliance between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia. For Kyiv, the partnership could bring much-needed funding to its defence industry.
If finalised, the agreement would allow Saudi Arabia to cut costs while improving its drone defences. Ukraine's defence sector would gain financial support at a critical time. The collaboration reflects broader shifts in how Middle Eastern nations address regional security threats.
