Saudi Arabia and Pakistan sign a defense pact, committing to consider an attack on either nation as an attack on both.
In a significant development, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have strengthened their bilateral relations by signing a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement during a state visit by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Riyadh in September 2022.
Accompanied by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and a delegation of senior officials including Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Asim Munir, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Musadik Malik, and Tariq Fatemi, Prime Minister Sharif was warmly received by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
The agreement, aimed at developing aspects of defence cooperation between the two countries and strengthening joint deterrence against any aggression, was signed following a joint statement issued after the visit. The statement reaffirmed that any aggression against either nation would be treated as an attack on both.
During the visit, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed greetings to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, while Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended his best wishes for Sharif's health and the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Pakistan.
The two leaders held an official session of talks at Al-Yamamah Palace, attended by delegations from both countries. The agreement, which pledges mutual defence, is expected to bolster the strategic partnership between the two nations.
Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs has stated that they will study the impact of the strategic mutual defence agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on national security and regional stability. The Indian government remains committed to protecting India's national interests and ensuring comprehensive national security in all domains.
This development marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations, further cementing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
