Thrilling Battle with PKNS, Mohd Zaki Pleased with Squad's Skills
KUCHING: Sarawak is still struggling to keep up with the challenge of the Premier League this season as they managed a disappointing 1-1 draw with PKNS at Stadium Sarawak, Petra Jaya last night. Playing in a slick field due to yesterday's rain in the city, both teams took the match seriously.
However, the visiting team delivered a shocker with a tight defense from the Sarawak side. In minute 34, they capitalized on a mistake by scoring through Mohamad Zamri.
This breakthrough seemed to spark energy in PKNS PKNS, pushing them to chase victory to strengthen their position in the league.
But Sarawak was undeterred, launching a brilliant counter-attack in the rainy atmosphere.
Mohd Zaki Shaikh Ahmad's young talents managed to create parity with a goal in minute 39, thanks to a lightning-fast strike by Zamri Morshidi.
"I am pleased with the effort shown by all players, but I admit our attacking moves still need improvement," said Mohd Zaki to Utusan Borneo here yesterday.
Mohd Zaki was impressed with the opportunities created by the strike force, which seemed to have materialized out of nowhere, thanks to former national strikers Efendi Abdul Malek and Mohd Shahrol Saperi on the bench.
Experienced coach Zamri was hailed for his strategic decision-making, as he managed to create scoring opportunities efficiently.
This was Zamri's second personal goal after scoring the lone goal in a 4-1 victory over KL Felda on Friday.
However, Mohd Zaki remains optimistic that his young players will step up in future matches to improve their overall performance.
"We still have a long way to go in this Premier League season, so I am hopeful the players will perform better and improve their skills individually," he said.
Mohd Zaki, who is also the Sarawak Team Manager, believes they can recover in the upcoming matches and improve their current standing.
Sarawak has so far played three matches, only managing to earn two points from two draws and one loss. The state team will face another tough challenge, as they take on the Young Tigers of Harimau Muda at Stadium Hang Tuah, Melaka this Friday.
"I hope we can give our best in the upcoming match against the young national team to gain the support of our dedicated Sarawak fans," he said.
