"Sarah Gigante's triumphant victory in the fourth stage of the Giro d'Italia Women's race appeared almost unbelievable"
In the north of Italy, Sarah Gigante, the 24-year-old Australian cyclist, claimed a significant victory at the Giro d'Italia Women 2025. The stage 4 victory, a solo summit victory, came after a gruelling 142km, horseshoe-shaped course that featured three smaller climbs and was dominated by the climb to Pianezze.
Gigante, a member of AG Insurance-Soudal Team, outperformed several GC favourites, including Elisa Longo Borghini and Marlen Reusser, to secure her place at the top of the stage. The stage profile peaked at 1,083m on the climb to Pianezze, and it was here that the main GC players, including Reusser, Gigante, and Longo Borghini, came to the fore.
Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime) applied pressure with a long, hard pull, reducing the group considerably. A breakaway group formed during the race, consisting of Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime), Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini (UAE Team ADQ), Alessia Vigilia (FDJ-Suez), and Lieke Nooijen (Visma-Lease a Bike). This group managed to stay out front almost to the foot of the Pianezze climb, with Vigilia putting in a creditable final push to stay ahead as the chasing peloton bore down.
Gigante, despite looking back multiple times during the race, picked her moment and managed to win the stage, marking the biggest victory of her career. With this win, she surrendered her overall lead to Reusser, who now leads the overall standings, with Longo Borghini 16 seconds behind and Gigante 34 seconds behind.
This victory comes after a challenging period for Gigante. She has recently struggled with endurance on descents and a serious injury, a broken femur during training, which forced her to miss the World Championships in Rwanda in August 2025. Earlier in 2025, she showed strong form during the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift; she held second overall going into the final stage but lost contact on the difficult descent of the Col de Joux-Plane, dropping to sixth overall after a hard day where she fought to limit losses despite physical fatigue.
Gigante's career boasts 9 UCI race wins and she is ranked 53rd in the UCI World Ranking as of mid-2025. Despite her recent struggles, her victory at the Giro d'Italia Women 2025 underscores her rising profile in women's cycling, marked by strong tactical skills. She has expressed hunger and motivation to return stronger from her injuries and setbacks.
Anna Henderson retained the red points jersey after stage 4. The Giro d'Italia Women 2025 continues to be a thrilling race, with the top contenders battling it out for the overall standings.
