Sarah Engels achieves fame in the realm of music
Sarah Engels, a popular figure on Instagram with 1.8 million followers, is set to make her debut on the musical stage as the lead character, Satine, in the musical "Moulin Rouge!" in Cologne. Starting from November 13, Engels will perform in 15 shows of the legendary Parisian nightclub-themed production.
Engels, known for her appearances in numerous TV formats such as "Let's Dance", "The Masked Singer", and "Dancing on Ice", as well as her own music releases, is new to the musical stage. Having no previous experience in this field, she had to prepare extensively for the demanding role.
The role of Satine requires acting and singing versatility due to its extensive stage time. Engels had to audition for the musical by performing singing and acting for the entire creative team, including the director, Alex Timbers. Some key members of the "Moulin Rouge!" production team are based in New York on Broadway and were not familiar with Engels.
To get used to the opulent costumes of the musical, Engels had to try on the shoes and corset early in the process. Singing in a corset, which restricts her breathing, presents a unique challenge. Despite the mental strain and physical demands of the role, Engels is set to start her run as Satine in "Moulin Rouge!" on November 13 in Cologne.
Engels became known through the RTL casting show "Deutschland sucht den Superstar" (DSDS). She was married to singer Pietro Lombardi from 2013 to 2019, whom she met on DSDS. He is the father of her first son. In 2021, she had a daughter with her new husband Julian.
The musical "Moulin Rouge!" is based on the 2001 film of the same name, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Engels is not sure if she could perform in musicals permanently due to her commitment to her family and wanting to spend time with her children.
Despite these uncertainties, Engels is ready to take on the challenge of portraying Satine in "Moulin Rouge!" in Cologne. Fans of the musical and Engels's music are eagerly awaiting her debut on the stage.
