The Trofeo Settecolli swimming competition in Rome witnessed a jaw-dropping display of talent from two Italian powerhouses, Sara Curtis of Savigliano and Anita Gastaldi of Bra. Both athletes secured top spots, adding another chapter to this historic trophy's lore.
Post-exam elation didn't slow down 18-year-old Sara Curtis, affiliated with the Italian Army and Cs Roero. Eager to polish her skills ahead of the Summer World Championships in Singapore, she dived into the Roman waters ready to conquer the 50m and 100m freestyle events.
The 100m freestyle race became Sara's signature event at the Trofeo Settecolli, earning a warm applause from the audience. The morning's heat provided key insights for coach Thomas Maggiora, who's been steering Sara's growth since day one. In the heats, Sara clocked 54.17 seconds, a second away from her Italian record of 53.01, set earlier this year at the Unipol Italian Championships in Riccione.
In the final, anticipation hung thick in the air. Sara, brimming with confidence, powered through the first 50 meters in 25.50, leading the pack. With a determined stride, she defended her position in the second half, crossing the finish line with a comfortable 53.73 seconds.
Anita Gastaldi of Bra left the competition with a sense of fulfillment, having qualified for the Singapore World Championships in the 200m individual medley. Coached by Fabrizio Clary, the 22-year-old Italian Carabinieri and V02 Nuoto Torino swimmer displayed remarkable form in the heats. Swimming a 1'01.54, Anita took a risky approach with a rapid 29.86 first 50m, followed by a commendable 31.68 for the remainder.
After a compelling heat, Anita entered the final with the fourth-fastest qualifying time. Starting from lane 4, she shot off the blocks and completed the first 50 meters in 29.74, trailing only Federica Toma, who had claimed the 50m backstroke event on day one. In the second half, Anita demonstrated incredible grit, clinching the title with an impressive time of 1'01.08. Shanahan, the British swimmer, followed closely behind with 1'01.09, while Toma rounded out the podium with 1'01.15.
