Sandy Alcantara tosses MLB's first complete game of 2024 in dominant shutout

Sandy Alcantara made history by throwing the first complete game of the 2024 MLB season. The Miami pitcher dominated the Chicago White Sox in a 93-pitch shutout, marking his 13th career complete game and fifth shutout. His performance extended a scoreless streak to 15 innings and showcased his resilience after past injuries. Alcantara relied on six different pitches—changeup, four-seam fastball, slider, sweeper, sinker, and cutter—to stifle the White Sox. He allowed just three singles, hit one batter, and struck out seven in the efficient outing. Manager Clayton McCullough trusted him to finish the ninth inning, citing his pitch efficiency and strong defensive support.

The shutout was Alcantara's second career 'Maddux'—a complete game under 100 pitches. His battery mate, Liam Hicks, contributed offensively with a home run, two singles, and four RBIs, leading the majors with 12 RBIs this season. Complete games have become rare in modern baseball. Last season saw only 29 across MLB, with 13 shutouts—the fewest in a full season since 1873. Alcantara's achievement stands out even more after his struggles, including Tommy John surgery and a tough 2025 campaign. Yet, he never lost confidence in his ability to bounce back.

Alcantara's shutout breaks a dry spell for complete games in 2024. His mix of pitches and control kept the White Sox off balance, while Hicks' offensive surge added to the win. The performance highlights Alcantara's durability and skill in an era where complete games are increasingly uncommon.
