Adrian Sandler's Latest Comedy Film: 1990s Comedy Continues to Thrive in 2025 - Sandler's second installment in the Happy series:
In a bold move, Adam Sandler, now 58, has brought back the iconic character Happy Gilmore in the long-awaited sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. The film, currently streaming on Netflix, has been a massive success, breaking viewing records and becoming the biggest U.S. Netflix film debut of 2025.
The original film, released in 1996, was a massive hit for Sandler and launched his Hollywood career. The nostalgia resonating with the Netflix audience has undoubtedly played a significant role in the sequel's success.
Sandler signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix in 2014, and films resulting from this deal include Murder Mystery, Murder Mystery 2, You're Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, and Spaceman: A Brief History of Bohemian Space Travel.
The success of Happy Gilmore 2 is not surprising, given that the original was a cultural phenomenon and a box office success. The sequel, released on Netflix on July 25, has also been a success, ranking first on Netflix's list of English-language movies for the week of its release (July 21–27, 2025).
Despite mixed critical reviews, Happy Gilmore 2 dominated Netflix streaming charts immediately after release, drawing 46.7 million views worldwide in its first three days and 4.7 million views in the U.S. over its initial weekend. The sequel features much of the original cast, contributing to its strong performance.
It seems that Sandler's return to the character of Happy Gilmore has been a winning move, appealing to both nostalgic fans and new viewers alike.
