Sánchez and Clavijo to Discuss Migration, Canarian Agenda, and Budgets in Lanzarote on Monday

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Monday, August 18, on the island of Lanzarote. The meeting aimed to address commitments made after signing the Canary Islands Agenda, emphasizing the need for tailored regulations to address regional issues.

During the meeting, Clavijo proposed a Decree Law to address specific issues for the Canary Islands. This proposal aligns with the commitments of the Canary Islands Agenda, which likely involve regional economic, environmental, and social policies.

However, the handling of migrant minors seeking asylum was not explicitly mentioned in the available information about the meeting between Sánchez and Clavijo.

Clavijo has previously expressed dissatisfaction that the commitments made in the previous meeting on the island of La Palma have not been fulfilled. He also hinted that the Spanish Government may be delaying the transfer of asylum seekers until the distribution of more than 5,000 minors accommodated in the Canary Islands among the rest of the autonomous communities is resolved.

In a separate event, a tragic incident occurred when a migrant boat capsized off the Canary Islands, resulting in deaths and missing persons. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in the region, but it does not appear to be a topic covered in the meeting between Sánchez and Clavijo.

Clavijo has expressed concern about the arrival of "children and girls" in dinghies and cayucos due to improved navigation conditions in September and October. He has called for the Government's cooperation and institutional loyalty for the discreet and protective transfer of minor asylum seekers.

The Supreme Court has previously ordered the Government to take charge of the transfers of minor asylum seekers with its resources. Clavijo finds the excuse of a lack of places for the suspension of the transfer of asylum-seeking children scheduled for this Thursday not credible.

The meeting between the two presidents will continue to address issues such as migration, the Canarian agenda, budgetary matters, and government actions. Clavijo hopes and wishes that the current situation can be resolved immediately.
