Amidst the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Gaza Strip, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged European partners to immediately halt their association agreement with Israel. In a stark warning, Sánchez described the escalating situation in Gaza as a "catastrophic genocide situation." His remarks were made ahead of the EU summit in Brussels on June 23, 2025.
The European External Action Service (EEAS) had published a damning report on the situation in the Palestinian territory on June 9, 2025. In the report, it was suggested that Israel may have violated its human rights obligations based on assessments from independent international institutions.
