San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy ink deals on a five-year contract, reportedly worth $265 million, as per an Associated Press insider.

Spicy Take: Brock Purdy, the NFL's esteemed quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, just seared a record by pocketing a whopping $265 million in his freshly signed five-year extension. Now he's one of the league's highest-paid players, a hotshot who started from the final pick of the 2022 draft.

A mysterious insider chattered to the Associated Press about the deal, dishing that it includes a jaw-dropping $181 million guaranteed. No drama, no holdouts—the Niners got this deal done with Purdy swiftly. He's got his greenback ahead of on-field practices kicking off later this month.

Purdy, a budget hero in earlier seasons, made under a cool million a year for his first three seasons. His Pro Bowl glory last season set the stage for a new deal, placing Purdy among the top 10 in quarterback contracts. Recent years have seen the Niners battling through several high-profile contract disputes, but not this time.

His rise from the draft's ultimate scrappy pick (nicknamed "Mr. Irrelevant") to a top-earner is nothing short of a remarkable journey. He snatched the starting spot during his rookie season, became a finalist for the MVP award in 2023, and sent the Niners to the Super Bowl. Even with a misstep in 2024 due to injuries, he's proved himself a reliable QB when he's in top shape.

Purdy's success has been a game-changer for the Niners, rescuing them from a potentially disastrous decision to trade three first-round picks for Trey Lance in 2021. In an unfathomable twist, Lance ultimately struggled and got shipped out in 2023.

The Niners snapped up Purdy with the 262nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, and even before his exhibition debut, coach Kyle Shanahan told owner Jed York that Purdy was the team's finest quarterback. He seized his chance when Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with season-ending injuries. Purdy won the final five starts of the regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs before a destabilizing elbow injury in the NFC title game loss to the Eagles.

That setback didn't slow him down. He still put up impressive numbers in the 2023 season, with a lustrous 108 passer rating, 16 TDs, and only four interceptions. He maintained his brilliance in 2024, boasting a career-best 4,280 passing yards, setting a franchise record and becoming the first Niners QB in over two decades to toss at least 30 TD passes.

His 2024 season was somewhat challenging, hampered by injuries to key players like Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, and Brandon Aiyuk. Purdy's passer rating dropped to 96.1, he tossed only 20 TD passes, and had 12 interceptions. Still, his outstanding performances in critical games, like remarkable comebacks over Green Bay and Detroit during the playoffs, speak volumes.

Unfortunately, success was elusive in 2024 as Purdy and the 49ers went winless in the playoffs, leading to a dismal 6-11 record and their first missed playoff appearance since 2020. But his dedicated coaches, Jed York, and John Lynch stood by him, keen on keeping Purdy as their long-term solution at quarterback.

In other (less scintillating) news, the Niners brought in a new kicker to battle incumbent Jake Moody. The agent for Greg Joseph announced that his client has signed a one-year deal. Joseph has played for the Jets, Giants, and Commanders and has nailed 82.3% of his career field goal tries since 2018. Moody struggled in 2024, with a mere 71% conversion rate.
