San Diego Comic Con's Historical Overview

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), initially established in 1970 as the Golden State Comic Book Convention, has grown to become one of the largest and most iconic pop culture events in the world.

The convention's roots can be traced back to March 1970, when it was a small gathering of around 300 enthusiasts in San Diego. Founded by Shel Dorf and a group of friends, the event has since evolved into a global phenomenon.

Over the years, SDCC has consistently attracted record-breaking crowds. In 2018, the attendance surpassed 130,000 people, a figure that has been consistently exceeded in subsequent years. However, the event was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As we move towards 2025, SDCC continues to be a significant platform for fans of comics, movies, and pop culture. The convention is renowned for its elaborate booths, panels featuring industry professionals, and exclusive releases of merchandise and announcements from major studios like DC Comics.

In a special celebration for SDCC 2025, DC Comics is commemorating its history with a decade-long plan leading up to its 100th anniversary in 2035. The DC booth will focus on the first decade of its existence, highlighting iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, along with early comic book series.

While the details for SDCC 2023 have yet to be announced, the event is scheduled to take place from July 19th to July 23rd this year. In addition, a supplemental IRL event is planned for the fall. For those unable to attend in person, SDCC has also been held online for its 51st appearance this July.

SDCC's influence extends beyond its annual event, with vendors selling Comic Con exclusive collectables, only available at the convention. The convention also boasts a 450,000 square foot exhibit hall, making it one of the biggest Comic-Con events in the country.

Over the years, SDCC has earned several Guinness World Records for Largest Annual Pop Culture Convention. Despite facing challenges since 2020, the event continues to thrive, providing a platform for fans to connect, celebrate, and immerse themselves in the world of pop culture.

For those interested in attending, it's worth noting that SDCC badges have already been sold. However, for those missing out on the event, eBay auctions for some badges are available until July 3rd.
