Salvage effort underway in Sicily for British-registered luxury yacht that sank the previous year
Get ready for the grim details of a tragic sinking from last summer, as experts gear up for the recovery of the British-flagged superyacht, Bayesian, off the coast of Sicily. The 56-meter sailing vessel took the lives of eight individuals, including esteemed tech mogul, Mike Lynch, his daughter, Hannah, and five others last August 19th.
Marine salvage operations started on Sunday, overseen by the Italian Coast Guard, delving into the depths to bring the iconic Bayesian to the surface. During the mission, underwater operators, Remotely Operated Vehicles, ROVS, and remote-controlled robots will be employed for a week, facilitating the delicate recovery process.
The powerful maritime crane, 'Hebo Lift 10,' was transported to the Sicilian port of Termini Imerese from Rotterdam, prepared to help with the lifting operation. With the assistance of further marine and logistical experts, around 70 professionals from Europe have been mobilized for this operation.
The actual lifting stage will occur during a second phase of operations, requiring the cutting of the yacht's 75-meter aluminum mast to facilitate the hull's easy ascent from the seabed at a depth of 49 meters.
The Heartrending Demise of the Bayesian
Described as a 47,300-tonne maxi yacht, the Bayesian plunged to the ocean floor only sixteen minutes after midnight, moments before dawn on August 19th of the previous year. The superyacht had been anchored 300 meters from the small fishing port of Porticello, about 15 kilometers east of Palermo, Sicily. When disaster struck, seven individuals remained aboard, while fifteen managed to escape into a life raft with assistance from nearby vessels. Sadly, the remaining individuals did not make it out of the doomed vessel.
Among the deceased were UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, along with several other prominent figures such as Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda, and the ship's cook, Recaldo Thomas.
Investigations by Italian prosecutors into the cause of the sinking, including potential charges against the captain and crew members for negligence and failing to respond adequately to the crisis, remain ongoing. Several crew members—Captain James Cutfield, Chief Engineer Timothy Parker Eaton, and Deckhand Matthew Griffiths—are currently under investigation for their actions during the storm.
