Salvadoran President Advocating for Bitcoin Announces 2024 Election Bid
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele Seeks Re-election for a Second Term
Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador, has announced his intention to seek re-election in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for February 4, 2024. The ruling party of El Salvador, Neuva Ideas, officially nominated Bukele as their presidential candidate on October 26.
Bukele, who became the President of El Salvador in 2019, has expressed a desire for five more years in office to continue improving the country. In a speech to thousands of citizens, he stated, 'Today is a good day to remember that immediate presidential re-election is prohibited up to 7 times by the Constitution.' However, he did not elaborate on how he plans to navigate this constitutional restriction.
The decision to nominate Bukele as the presidential candidate was strongly welcomed by the public ahead of the 2024 election. Neuva Ideas, the current most popular political party in El Salvador, has gained significant support under Bukele's leadership, particularly due to his controversial move to make Bitcoin a legal tender in September 2021, making El Salvador the world's first country to do so.
Bukele has been gradually buying Bitcoin over the past years. He has also been praised for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his efforts to reduce crime rates in the country.
As his 5 years of term as president nears closing, Bukele stated, 'Five more, five more and not one step back.' He further emphasised, 'we need five years to continue improving our county.'
The presidential election in El Salvador is expected to be a closely contested race, with Bukele's opponents likely to challenge his eligibility due to the constitutional prohibition on immediate presidential re-election. However, Bukele's popularity and the support of Neuva Ideas could potentially swing the election results in his favour.
