Porsche Pulls the Plug on Gasoline Macan in EU Amid Costly Regulatory Changes
In a move that's about as surprise-filled as a used fireworks factory, luxury car manufacturer Porsche, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, announced its intention to quit selling the gasoline-powered Macan SUV in Europe's Union (EU). The main catalyst for this decision is the exorbitant cost of adapting the vehicle's platform to meet EU's daunting new registration regulations.
A spokesperson confirmed the information, following a report in the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspapers, which broke the news on Thursday. It appears that the Macan's platform will no longer be compatible with the EU's future regulatory framework. This means the vehicle will be off the market starting from the early part of July.
From July 1st, only vehicles that are immune to cybersecurity attacks can be newly registered in the EU. To achieve this, manufacturers must implement specific software interventions for control units, and they must establish, document, and certify cybersecurity procedures during the early stages of development.
Unfortunately, these requirements were unknown at the time of development for the gasoline models, and it's challenging to remedy this issue now, the spokesperson shared.
Though sales of the gasoline Macan SUV are heading towards retirement in the EU, Porsche remains committed to its electric Macan range in the region, underlining its dedication to eco-friendly mobility solutions.
