Cracking open the festive season with local spruce, Saxon families rejoice! "Even amidst the catastrophic impact of climate change on our forests, there's no necessity to abandon the tradition of a twinkling Christmas tree or resort to plastic alternatives," said the President of State Forestry, Utz Hempfling. Kicking off the annual Christmas tree hunt, on Monday, Saxony's Forest Queen and primary school kids from Dresden Heath joined hands to launch the festive celebrations.

This year, over four weeks, the forest districts of the state-owned enterprise will open their gates, allowing the community to handpick their pine tree gems. The local Christmas tree's appeal extends beyond its natural charm. Due to its short transportation routes, it boasts an admirable carbon footprint, promoting a green approach in your own backyard.

The customs surrounding Christmas trees in Saxony are steeped in tradition, from cutting down trees in the forest districts to savouring the enchanting scent throughout the home. Signifying the community's commitment to the environment, these practices help shape Saxony's sustainable ethos.

Leveraging locally sourced Christmas trees, as seen in Saxony's annual practice, offers numerous ecological benefits:

  1. Cut Down on CO2 Emissions: By opting for locally sourced trees, you significantly reduce the need for long-distance transportation, leading to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
  2. Nurturing Local Farmers: Choosing a real Christmas tree from a local farm supports rural economies and showcases the prowess of local tree farmers.
  3. Carbon Dioxide Absorption: While trees absorb carbon dioxide during their growth, their carbon footprint is short-lived after they're cut and decompose.
  4. Post-Holiday Waste Management: Once the festivities are over, real trees can be turned into compost or used for mulch, minimizing waste and reducing methane emissions in landfills.
  5. Contributing to Erosion Control and Wildlife Habitat: Real trees can be utilized as erosion barriers or transformed into fish habitats in lakes, fulfilling additional ecological roles.
  6. Promoting Sustainable Forest Management: Locally sourced trees often hail from managed forests, which preserve the environment and encourage biodiversity.
  7. Minimizing Waste: Reusing artificial tree components and donating old ornaments can further minimize waste during the holiday season.
  8. Green Choices and DIY Decor: Crafting your own decorations from eco-friendly materials is an innovative and sustainable approach to holiday celebrations.

By embracing the local Christmas tree tradition and adopting sustainable practices, one can make eco-conscious choices during the holiday season, contributing to a greener environment.
