In a press conference today, Salahuddin Ahmed, a Standing Committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), highlighted the importance of holding referendums on any constitutional amendments in the next parliament.

Ahmed stated that the formation of the interim government was in accordance with the Supreme Court's opinion, as he confirmed its swearing-in by the President. He also emphasised that the interim government should not be questioned with what he described as baseless street rhetoric.

During a dialogue of the National Consensus Commission in Dhaka today, three issues were discussed: the constitution order, holding a referendum on election day, and a post-election referendum on constitutional changes. However, the current referendum discussion does not seem to be explicitly mentioned as one of the issues discussed in the dialogue.

Ahmed further explained that the parliament has the authority to change the basic structure of the Constitution, but Article 142 makes it mandatory to hold a referendum on such changes. He added that another referendum must be held after the constitutional amendment. This implies that there will be two referendums on the same issue.

Ahmed also stated that one year has passed since the formation of the interim government. He did not, however, mention any specific ousted fascist forces benefiting from leaving the matter unresolved.

In conclusion, Salahuddin Ahmed, a prominent BNP leader, has called for two referendums on any constitutional amendments in the next parliament, emphasising the importance of upholding the mandatory requirement of Article 142 for any changes to the basic structure of the Constitution.
