Sakurajima volcano erupts in southern Japan with 4,400m ash plume

Southern Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupted early Sunday, spewing ash and smoke up to 4,400 metres high. Despite the display, no damage has been reported in Kagoshima prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned residents in Kagoshima and neighbouring Miyazaki prefecture to protect against ashfall. Although the eruption hasn't caused harm, the agency advises caution.

Sakurajima's alert level remains at three, the second-highest level, indicating restricted access to the mountain. This level has been maintained due to continued volcanic activity.

While Sunday's eruption of Sakurajima caused no immediate damage, residents in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures are urged to stay vigilant against potential ashfall. The volcano's alert level remains elevated, and access to the mountain is restricted.
