Saitama Sinkhole Incident: Recovered body believed to be that of the missing driver
In a stunning unscheduled announcement, the authorities in Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo, revealed a grisly discovery: a body resembling a human was found inside a 70-plus-year-old driver's truck that was engulfed by a sinkhole nearly three months ago.
The sinkhole, measuring a staggering 40 meters wide and 15 meters deep, opened at an intersection in Yashio back in late January. The truck, after being swept about 30 meters downstream, was lodged within the sewer system beneath.
Since then, the search for the driver had been on pause due to the persistent risk of further collapse. However, the local government managed to divert a large volume of sewage water with bypass work, greenlighting a recovery attempt this week.
Remembering the tragic incident, Saitama Governor Motohiro Ono pledged undying efforts to ensure access to the driver's cabin, and the rescue operation was scheduled to kick off as early as Friday. The team, comprising firefighters and police, will enter the sewer pipe to carry out a full-scale recovery operation.
Before this, a preliminary investigation was carried out to assess the conditions within the pipe, primarily focusing on water flow and hydrogen sulfide gas levels. The findings suggested that the risk of disaster escalation inside the pipe was considerably low, making the recovery attempt feasible.
As per the new plan, a sloped access route, custom-built from the sinkhole to the sewer pipe, will be utilized to reach the truck cabin. To bring the cabin up, a separate vertical shaft has been prepared, equipped to handle heavy machinery.
Initially, when the sinkhole swallowed the truck, the bed was retrieved, but the cab, with the driver, remained trapped within the sewer network. A drone survey in February confirmed the presence of a human-like figure inside the cab, triggering meticulous planning and preparation for the recovery process.
These three long months have been quite an ordeal for the authorities and the community alike, who have all come together to ensure the rescue of the driver as soon as possible. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature, and we can only hope for a swift and peaceful conclusion to this harrowing tale.
