NFL Draft 2023: A Quarterback-less Second Round

Saints select quarterback Tyler Shough while Shedeur Sanders' draft prospect remains open

Boy, the 2023 NFL Draft sure threw us a curveball - or should I say a Hail Mary? You guessed it! Not a single quarterback was drafted in the second round.

While Shedeur Sanders' draft stock continued to dive, the New Orleans Saints snatched up Louisville's Tyler Shough at pick 40 overall. After seven seasons in college, plagued by injuries, Shough finally got his chance to shine with the Cardinals last season, tossing for 3,195 yards and 23 TDs.

With Derek Carr's shoulder injury casting doubt on his future, the Saints might be looking at Shough as their next QB1. Spencer Rattler threw for 1,317 yards last season in seven games for New Orleans, but his 0-6 record as a starter wasn't enough to convince them.

In the first round, we saw Miami's Cam Ward (drafted by the Titans) and Ole Miss's Jaxson Dart (selected by the Giants) snatch up the QB spots. Defensive linemen were the real stars in the second round, with nine picks, followed by five defensive backs, five offensive linemen, and three running backs.

Cleveland bagged two of the top five picks in the second round with UCLA linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Iowa State wide receiver Jayden Higgins. Other interesting selections include Quinshon Judkins, the first running back picked (by the Browns), and LSU tight end Mason Taylor, son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor (drafted by the Jets).

So, there you have it! The second round of the 2023 NFL Draft came and went without the call of a quarterback. Guess we'll just have to wait and see who steps up to be the next big star!
