New Orleans Saints Quarterback Battle Heats Up Ahead of 2025 NFL Season

The New Orleans Saints are in the midst of a heated quarterback competition, as first-year head coach Kellen Moore works to determine the team's starting signal-caller. The competition has been a close one, with none of the three contenders – Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and Tyler Shough – pulling ahead of the pack.

In the Saints' preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, all three quarterbacks saw playing time. Spencer Rattler started the game, completing 7 of 11 passes for 53 yards. Jake Haener followed, completing 5 of 8 passes for 41 yards, including an interception. Tyler Shough, who played at Louisville, completed 15 of 22 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Despite the close competition, Rattler has been given the nod for the second preseason game, starting against the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday at home. This suggests that Rattler may be the frontrunner for the starting spot, but an official decision is not expected until after the preseason concludes.

"The competition has been balanced, and all have had good moments," Moore said. "It's a collaborative decision process, and it's a challenging choice because both Rattler and Shough have performed well."

Moore has indicated that he plans to continue rotating the quarterbacks, giving them different opportunities before making a final decision. He has also ruled out the possibility of bringing in an outside veteran quarterback.

"The quarterbacks are young in the league, and they still have lessons to learn," Moore said. "But I'm eager to let the competition play out and see who emerges as the best option for our team."

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns are also facing a significant quarterback battle, with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, Tyler Huntley, and Shedeur Sanders all vying for the starting spot. The 2025 NFL season is quickly approaching, and both the Saints and Browns will be eager to find their starting quarterbacks and get their seasons underway.
