Sailors from Women: Pioneering a New Course on World Ocean Day in Dubai
Let's Set Sail: Women Making Waves in Dubai's Maritime Scene
Today, June 8, is World Ocean Day, and we're taking a closer look at three incredible women from different corners of the globe who found their sea legs and more in the welcoming waters of Dubai.
For Christelle Bedrossian, a health coach/nutritionist, and certified hypnotherapist, the journey to Dubai's shores began with one of life's most turbulent storms. She moved to Dubai in 2020 in search of a harbor amidst the political and economic chaos in her native Lebanon, taking her twins along for the ride. "Stepping into Dubai felt like I found my home," she said, her voice filled with warmth and relief.
But it wasn't until recently that Christelle discovered her passion for sailing, which has since become the cornerstone of her fitness routine. "I love trying new things, and sailing offers a space that's safe, calm, and almost meditative for me," she shared. The physical demands didn't deter her - not even when blisters kept her right hand out of commission for two weeks! "Dubai is amazing for anyone looking to learn water sports," she added.
Iulia Ailincai's affair with water started long before she set foot in Dubai 14 years ago. Growing up in Galati, Romania, a port city on the Danube River, she was practically born with saltwater in her veins. Her father, an experienced ship pilot navigating the Danube and Black Sea, introduced her to sailing during magical summer holidays in the Danube Delta.
When she stumbled upon Dubai's sailing classes online in 2024, it was destiny calling. "I used to sit at Kite Beach, watching the small boats during training hours. I could imagine myself out there," Iulia said, her eyes lighting up with the fire of her passion. Now, she plans her weekends around sailing activities, attends one or two sessions monthly, and has become part of a crew that feels like family.
Bianca, a German-Mexican mix, has also found her sea legs in Dubai's sailing community. She discovered the sport through a desire to change her scenery and escape the daily grind. "I like to go to the beach and relax, but sailing offers a completely new way to disconnect," she noted. What sets Dubai's sailing community apart is its inviting nature, especially for women. "There's no pressure to have prior sailing experience," Bianca said. "It's a great way to meet new people who are all super nice."
On World Ocean Day, these women see limitless potential for female participation in sailing as Dubai continues to expand its coastline with new marinas and facilities. "Passionate skippers and encouraging crews will play a vital role in encouraging women to join sailing," said Iulia. According to her, women bring valuable skills to the table, including patience, adaptability, and a can-do attitude.
So, if you're a woman considering taking up sailing, Christelle says all you need is the will to try. "Dubai is an amazing city, and the sailing experience is truly unparalleled," she added. For Bianca, sailing has become more than just a sport - it's a source of empowerment and personal growth. "There was a moment in sailing where I felt surprised and empowered," she said. "It's an incredible feeling to harness the wind and navigate the waters."
These women also shared their appreciation for Dubai's sailing community, which offers continuous support and updates about training sessions and sailing events. They are also inspired by Cdr. Abhilash Tomy (Retd), India's legendary solo sailor who has sailed more than 100,000 nautical miles. Tomy has collected water samples from Earth's remote corners, demonstrating the worldwide spread of microplastics.
In Dubai's welcoming waters, these women have found more than just a sport - they've found a sanctuary. And as they continue to navigate the high seas, they're helping to break down stereotypes, empower future generations, and make the maritime world a more inclusive space for all.
