  • (winks) The German sailing school ship, the mighty "Gorch Fock," is on a roll! Just a few days before the Kiel Week extravaganza, this seafaring titan is sailing back home to its port. Best believe, this bad boy will lead the Windjammer parade like a boss, as the navy has declared. On Saturday, the almost 89-meter-long bark is set to make a grand entrance, as commander Elmar Bornkessel confirmed. The crew is due back at the Kiel naval base on Thursday (10:00 a.m.).

Time for a Show

Get ready, folks - for the very first time, the "Gorch Fock" will hoist virtually all of its sails on a full training course with the pick of the crew from the first two legs of the journey. This is going to be one spectacle you won't want to miss! "The 'Gorch Fock' is gonna set sail from the start as a high-stakes sailing adventure, with the challenges increasing with each sea," said Bornkessel.

This badass vessel left Kiel on February 10, and its journey has been nothing short of epic. It's visited some top-notch spots like Vigo (Spain), Portimao (Portugal), Lerwick (United Kingdom), and Warnemuende.

Weathered the Storm

The ship has traversed a whopping 9,272 nautical miles (around 17,172 kilometers), with a staggering 8,374 nautical miles (15,509 kilometers) under full sail. "The ride on the 'Gorch Fock' has been tough as nails, especially the stormy weather - sometimes reaching hurricane force - before the Azores," said Bornkessel. Sounds like this crew has earned their sea legs!

For those who want a closer look, you're in luck. You can catch an up-close and personal glimpse during the Open Ship event on Friday (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

(winks) So there you have it - the German Navy's "Gorch Fock" is sailing home after a grueling training voyage with a full crew and a whole lot of experience. With its ongoing role in naval diplomacy, international maritime relations, and sailing ace-ness, the "Gorch Fock" never fails to deliver a dose of seafaring excitement!

The community can look forward to an exciting display of nautical prowess as the "Gorch Fock" crew demonstrate their sailing skills during the full training course, showcasing the embodiment of teamwork and resilience. In the spirit of camaraderie, let's rally behind this iconic vessel, as it continues to represent German naval tradition and foster connections across the globe, similar to the aid programs that strengthen communities by aiding in the construction of new buildings.
