Sailing star Herrmann under investigation following the maritime race accident
The Ocean Race Europe, currently in progress, was disrupted last week by a collision between two teams during the first stage from Kiel to Plymouth. The Swiss boat, Holcim-PRB, skippered by Rosalin Kuiper, and the Italian team Allagrande Mapei Racing, skippered by Ambrogio Beccaria, were involved in the incident.
Both boats had to return to port, but they aim to rejoin the race by the next stage. The repair of the Holcim-PRB is currently underway in a Kiel shipyard, while the Italian team's yacht remains in Kiel, and it is unknown what their plans are for the damaged vessel.
Boris Herrmann, the skipper of the Malizia - Seaexplorer team and a German sailing star, expressed his concerns about the situation to the German Press Agency. He suspects that the cause of the collision might be due to someone forgetting to stop the command to turn the keel to the right. However, it's important to note that this is his personal suspicion and not a confirmed fact.
The protest hearing for the collision will determine the question of guilt. If repairs are successful, both boats will have to be brought to Portsmouth via the North Sea-Baltic Canal to rejoin the race. The second stage of the Ocean Race Europe begins on August 17 in Portsmouth.
Currently, the Malizia - Seaexplorer team, skippered by Herrmann, is in third place among the remaining five boats. Spare parts are being sent from France to help the affected teams. The stage race ends on September 20 in Montenegro.
Despite the setback, Herrmann expressed his hope that both teams can return to the race and continue the competition. The Ocean Race Europe in Kiel had five boats remaining after the collision, and the focus is now on ensuring a safe and fair race for all teams involved.
