Starting in April, navigation on Saxony's largest water body will be permitted for vessels. - Sailing on Saxony's largest lake becomes possible from April
Sail away on Saxony's grand lakescape: Boating season kicks off in April!
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey as Saxony's largest lake, the Bärwalder See, opens up for passenger ships and sports boats from the abrilese season. Two decisive decrees from the Saxon State Administration Office have made it possible for permanent nautical activities on the lake in Lusatia, as announced by the authorities.
As Béla Bélafi, President of the Saxon State Administration Office, exclaims, "This is a gripping development in our efforts to transform the former Bärwalde open-cast mine into a sparkling recreational and water sports haven for the region!" Indeed, the revitalization of the lake further bolsters Lusatia's growing reputation as a water sports and tourism paradise. The town of Boxberg (Upper Lusatia) and investors are now equipped with the security they need to develop more enticing tourist offerings.
Nature's treasures preserved
For the sake of conservation and preserving fragile ecosystems, three areas spanning about 13 square kilometers of the lake remain off-limits to boat traffic. Similar to previous arrangements, a central trapezoidal area in the heart of the lake is closed, along with restricted zones at the western bay north of Uhyst and the eastern bay south of the Boxberg beach.
From June 1 to September 30, the open waters beckon sailors, whereas boating is discouraged from November through March. From April to May, and in October, vessels may navigate the lake from sunrise to sunset.
"Users of the lake, particularly our passionate skippers, now have a clear understanding of the rules of engagement on the lake," shared Béla Bélafi, President of the Saxon State Administration Office. "At the same time, we reassure the protection of vulnerable bird species."
Previously, individual permits were needed for every ship voyage, leading to a burdensome experience for both users and administrators. This antiquated regulation has been done away with.
