The high-octane sailing competition, SailGP, is set to ignite the passion for sailing in Germany and beyond, as it prepares for an exciting lineup of events in the coming years. The second half of the current 2023 season will kick off in Portsmouth on July 19 and 20, followed by a stop in Sassnitz, a picturesque port town on the island of Rügen, from August 16 to 17.
Founded in 2019 by five-time America's Cup winner Russell Coutts and Oracle founder Larry Ellison, SailGP is often described as the Formula 1 of sailing. Twelve teams from twelve countries are competing in twelve events for a season prize of twelve million US dollars. This year, the competition will make its debut in Christchurch, New Zealand, showcasing the thrilling fleet races in identical F50 catamarans.
Looking ahead to 2025, the SailGP season will expand further, with fourteen events scheduled across five continents. Cities such as Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, and Auckland, among others, will host the high-speed races, emphasising the event's global reach and entertainment value.
In Germany, the SailGP Team, backed by Wuppertal communication technology entrepreneur Thomas Riedel and four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel, is fighting for promotion in its second season. Two-time Olympic bronze medalist Erik Kosegarten-Heil is the driver for the team, which is aiming to make a strong impression in its first home game in Sassnitz.
Kosegarten-Heil expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, calling it the highlight of the season. He plans to approach the British SailGP summit and the home game in Sassnitz with a higher risk profile, aiming to secure a promotion spot for the team.
The SailGP event in Sassnitz will take place off the longest accessible sea pier in Europe, in the Baltic Sea region. Approximately 5,600 seats are available on tribunes and in the stadium, and around 20,000 visitors are expected to attend the two-day event.
Andrew Thompson, Managing Director of SailGP, described the competition as "unlike any sailing you've ever seen." With speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, the races are sure to be a spectacle not to be missed.
