Kiel, a renowned sailing metropolis, will welcome the international long-distance regatta, "Tall Ships Races," during the Kieler Woche in 2028. Mayor Ulf Kämpfer (SPD) expressed his excitement, stating, "The return of this prestigious sailing event to Kiel underscores our city's rich maritime heritage and sailing infrastructure."

Last participating in the regatta in 1987, Kiel is slated to be one of four Baltic Sea ports for the 2028 event. The international race, taking place from June 22 to July 25, will also visit Turku (Finland), Tallinn (Estonia), and Stettin (Polen), before culminating in Kiel during the Kieler Woche 2028, which runs from June 17 to 25.

The Kieler Woche director, Philipp Dornberger, emphasized the significance of traditional sailing ships in captivating enthusiasts and contributing to the festival's appeal. Being chosen as the starting port for the unique regatta reinforces Kiel's standing as an integral hub for international sailing competitions in the Baltic Sea region.
