Rescue Efforts Save Four Sailors from Sinking Yacht "Salamander VI"

In a dramatic turn of events on the Havel waterway, rescuers from the German Red Cross (DRK), German Life-Saving Society (DLRG), and the Berlin Fire Department rescued four sailors from the frigid waters on Saturday. Their 10-meter yacht, "Salamander VI," unexpectedly sank near Schwanenwerder. One sailing companion was found entangled and pulled under with the sinking vessel.

The incident occurred around 15:15, according to police spokespersons, who attributed the accident to a combination of adverse weather conditions and improper handling of the boat, occupied by four men. Three of the sailors managed to escape, but one remained trapped and went down with the boat.

Remarkably, the man was rescued due to a quick emergency call placed by a passerby and eyewitness. In a mere two minutes, rescue forces from the DRK Water Watch, DLRG, and a boat from the Wannsee fire station arrived at the accident scene. Fire department spokesperson Vinzenz Kasch reported, "A rescue swimmer from the DRK Water Watch managed to retrieve the missing person and bring him to the surface."

Resuscitation efforts were immediately initiated while the man was still on board the rescue boat. A doctor flown in by helicopter and personnel from the Johanniter Accident Assistance then transported him to a hospital. Information on his current condition remains unavailable.

The sunken yacht belongs to the "Akademischer Verein Huette e.V." association based at the Pichelsee in Spandau. The classic wooden boat, a "Nationaler Kreuzer" type, features 45 square meters of sail area and was the flagship of the organization. As of now, it remains unclear when the yacht will be salvaged, although it poses no immediate danger to shipping since it is located outside the fairway and has been marked as an obstacle by the water police.
