SAG-AFTRA Opposes AI Actors Like Tilly Nurwood, Citing Threat to Livelihoods
SAG-AFTRA, representing around 160,000 actors and industry professionals, has opposed the use of artificial performers like Tilly Nurwood, a digital actress created by a computer program. The union argues that this technology threatens actors' livelihoods and devalues human craftsmanship.
Tilly Nurwood, developed by Particle6's studio Xicoia under CEO Eline van der Velden, was recently presented at a film industry conference in Zurich. Particle6 has hailed her as 'the next Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman'. However, SAG-AFTRA contests this, stating that Tilly Nurwood is not an actress but a character created by a computer program.
Actors are urging producers to engage in negotiations regarding the use of artificially created performers. SAG-AFTRA believes that audiences are not interested in watching computer-generated content detached from human experience. The union sees this as a direct threat to actors' jobs and the value of their skills.
SAG-AFTRA's opposition to AI-created performers like Tilly Nurwood highlights the potential impact of such technology on the acting industry. As the use of AI in entertainment continues to grow, the union will likely continue to advocate for its members and the value of human performance.
