For two decades, the enchanting figure of Urte Blankenstein, fondly known as "Mrs. Puppet Doctor Pille," captivated the hearts of East German children on television. Sadly, she passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at the age of 81, following a brief, serious illness in a Berlin hospital.

A Peaceful Farewell

Blankenstein's son Mathias confirmed the heartbreaking news to the tabloid "Superillu," quoting his mom as saying, “Mom once told me, ‘If I can’t perform anymore, I don’t want to live.’ She fulfilled that wish by passing away peacefully."

"Mrs. Puppet Doctor Pille" left an indelible mark on children with her appearances in East German children's programming. Even into her elderly years, she continued to perform, using her iconic role as a nostalgic reminder for many. Just last year, she was filmed at a nursing home, bringing joy to dementia patients with her trusted "Pittiplatsch" – a hand-knitted toy given to her by a devoted fan.

A Legendary Role in "Evening Greetings"

Blankenstein portrayed "Mrs. Puppet Doctor Pille with the big round glasses" in the East German show "Evening Greetings" for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988. She offered advice and guidance on a variety of topics, blending entertainment with subtle educational messaging. In addition to her son, Blankenstein leaves behind a granddaughter.
