Sacramento's U.S. 50 faces 11 days of lane closures and ramp shutdowns
A major roadworks project began in Sacramento on Friday evening, targeting repairs on a key onramp to U.S. Highway 50. The 11-day scheme will also resurface large sections of the highway and add new high-occupancy vehicle lanes between two major interchanges.
The work is expected to cause delays, with lane closures and ramp shutdowns in place over the weekend. Caltrans closed the Stockton Boulevard onramp to westbound U.S. 50 at 10 p.m. on Friday to repair a damaged bridge approach slab. The closure will remain in effect until 4 a.m. on Monday, May 18. Drivers heading west on U.S. 50 from Stockton Boulevard were advised to follow a detour.
Lane reductions on westbound U.S. 50 started at 9 p.m. on May 15 near 53rd Street. During the day, two right lanes and the auxiliary lane will be shut, while a third right lane will close at night. These restrictions will last for 55 hours to allow joint repairs at two bridge hinges.
The wider project involves rehabilitating 53 lane miles of pavement and adding 14 lane miles of high-occupancy vehicle lanes. The upgrades stretch from the U.S. 50/Interstate 5 interchange to the U.S. 50/Watt Avenue interchange. The repairs and improvements are set to continue for 11 days, with drivers facing ongoing disruptions. Caltrans has warned of delays and advised motorists to plan alternative routes where possible. The work is part of a broader effort to upgrade key sections of U.S. 50 in Sacramento.
