Sabres lock in Josh Doan with $6.95M-per-year extension through 2033
Josh Doan has inked a seven-year contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres. The pact, averaging $6.95 million per season, keeps him with the team until the 2032-33 campaign. This season, the 22-year-old forward has set career highs in goals, assists, and points.
Doan was previously a restricted free agent after this season. His new contract removes any uncertainty about his future in Buffalo. So far this year, he ranks third on the team in goals (15) and fourth in assists (20) and points (35).
On the ice, Doan has been a standout performer. He leads the NHL in takeaways with 35 and boasts the Sabres’ best 5-on-5 expected goals rate at 54.9%. Coach Lindy Ruff has compared his tenacious checking and work ethic to former Sabres forward Jason Pominville. General manager Jarmo Kekäläinen also praised Doan’s contributions, both on and off the ice. Meanwhile, three other Sabres players—Michael Kesselring, Zach Benson, and Peyton Krebs—remain scheduled for restricted free agency this summer.
The extension secures Doan’s role in Buffalo for nearly a decade. His defensive play, scoring ability, and consistency have made him a key player for the Sabres. The deal reflects the team’s confidence in his long-term impact.
