BSW Party Conference in Bautzen: Key Developments and Changes

The BSW (Free Voters) party held its conference in Bautzen over the weekend, marking a significant period of change for the third-largest faction in the state parliament of Saxony, behind the CDU and AfD.

Sabine Zimmermann, who has been a prominent figure in the party, announced her complete withdrawal from politics by the end of the year, citing a serious illness at the beginning of the year as the reason. She did not run for the Saxon party chairmanship at the conference.

In a surprising turn of events, Marcel Machill, the top candidate of the BSW in the federal election, left the party following a motion on Israel at the party conference. The motion led to his departure, causing a shake-up within the party ranks.

Despite the resignation of Sabine Zimmermann and the departure of Marcel Machill, the party conference proceeded to elect a new leadership team. Ronny Kupke, who has already taken over the state chairmanship, is considered the favorite for the faction chairmanship. However, a complete renewal of the executive committee has not been planned yet.

There have been rumors of a "revolt" behind Sabine Zimmermann's resignation, but these have been denied by several faction members. The party is now focusing on preparations for the state election in Saxony-Anhalt.

As a result of Sabine Zimmermann's resignation, Erik Recke will replace her in the state parliament. The search results do not contain information about the name of the candidate considered as the successor for the leadership duo of the BSW in January 2026, when a complete renewal of the executive committee is planned for a faction meeting.

The BSW party in Saxony currently holds 15 seats in the state parliament, making it the third-largest faction. The party conference in Bautzen this September was held on September 13, 2025.
