Saarbrücken FC guarantees relegation after Schmidt's late goal leads to a 2:1 defeat

In a thrilling match at the packed Ludwigspark stadium, witnessed by 15,303 spectators, 1. FC Saarbrücken secured a spot in the promotion/relegation play-offs to the 2nd Bundesliga with a 2:1 home win over Borussia Dortmund II.

Mike Tullberg, coach of Borussia Dortmund II, planned to play offensively during the game. Catharina Kuhn, a photographer, captured the intense moments of the encounter.

The first half saw Borussia Dortmund II causing trouble for 1. FC Saarbrücken, with Julian Hettwer scoring the initial goal for the visitors in the 34th minute. However, as the game progressed, Saarbrücken started to find their rhythm, and Kai Brünker equalized for the home team in the 67th minute.

The winning goal for 1. FC Saarbrücken came in the 86th minute, with Patrick Schmidt scoring what initially seemed to be the decisive goal. However, it was later ruled offside on TV pictures.

Despite the offside goal, Alois Schwartz, coach of 1. FC Saarbrücken, praised his team for their performance and comeback abilities. He mentioned that Schmidt scored the first and last goal of the round, which is beautiful but also characteristic of their offensive struggles.

Jürgen Luginger was singled out by Borussia Dortmund II's coach during the press conference. The defeat means relegation to the Regionalliga West for Borussia Dortmund II.

The FCS president, Heribert Ohlmann, expressed his support for the team, wishing them success, maximum concentration, and the necessary support from the stands for the upcoming promotion/relegation games. He described the season of 1. FC Saarbrücken as remarkable, full of passion, will, and impressive comeback qualities.

If 1. FC Saarbrücken qualifies for the promotion/relegation playoffs of the 2. Bundesliga, they will play against the team that finished 16th in the Bundesliga. This playoff decides whether Saarbrücken is promoted or the Bundesliga team remains.

The dates for the promotion/relegation play-off games for 1. FC Saarbrücken have been set: home game on May 23rd, away game on May 27th. Schwartz mentioned that they have set themselves up to watch all three potential relegation opponents live.

In the aftermath of the game, Schwartz expressed his gratitude to the fans and the team, emphasizing the remarkable season they have had so far. The promotion/relegation play-offs promise to be an exciting continuation of the season for 1. FC Saarbrücken and their supporters.
