S11 rail upgrade hits milestone but brings years of commuter chaos ahead

The S11 rail expansion project between Bergisch Gladbach and Cologne has reached a key milestone. DB InfraGO can now begin tendering construction contracts and planning track closures. The upgrade will bring faster services but also years of disruption for commuters. North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has committed €305 million to the project, bringing the total budget to €836 million. The federal government is contributing €531 million. Once complete, trains will run every 10 minutes, with near five-minute intervals at peak times.

The expansion includes a second track, upgraded stations, and accessibility improvements. A new central platform will also be added at Cologne Central Station. However, construction will cause major delays, starting with a major closure after Easter 2026.

Reconstruction work at Holweide and Dellbrück stations is set for July 9 to October 15, 2027. NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer expects all permits to be finalised this summer. Bergisch Gladbach's First Deputy Mayor, Ragnar Migenda, suggested construction could begin as early as late 2030.

The original completion target of early 2032 is now in doubt. Scheduling conflicts with other projects may push back the timeline further. The S11 expansion promises faster, more frequent trains for passengers. But commuters will face years of closures and delays before the upgrades are finished. The project's final cost and timeline remain uncertain for now.
