S-Bahn Shutdown Between Hauptbahnhof and Landungsbrücken: What Commuters Need to Know
Get ready for some major disruptions on your S-Bahn journey, folks! Due to some much-needed track updates in the Citytunnel, the line between Hauptbahnhof and Landungsbrücken will be out of service from December 3rd as per a railroad company spokesperson's announcement.
Don't fret too much though, as you've got alternatives to still reach your destinations. The U3 underground line serves as a handy substitute, with the schedule changes neatly outlined on your digital travel guides.
Now, about those trains that usually traverse this route… S2 trains can now only hop between Altona and Landungsbrücken. The S21 remains operational throughout the night between Elbgaustraße and Aumühle. The S31, however, is restricted to operating between Hauptbahnhof and Harburg Rathaus/Neugraben. Lastly, the S11 line only runs between Berliner Tor and Poppenbüttel.
The Citytunnel needed a break during the summer vacations, the main reason being unavoidable additional tasks and construction delays leading to the track renovations' postponement.
Logistically speaking, the Citytunnel refurbishment was a challenge. Thorough ventilation systems were required to ensure safety for workers underground, with the installation and removal taking several days aside.
The S-Bahn closure between Hauptbahnhof and Landungsbrücken isn't the only problem commuters face. As S2 trains continue their trips between Altona and Landungsbrücken, a lucky few benefit from this change, but the installation and removal of crucial ventilation systems during the Citytunnel restoration interfere with train schedules as well.

During the track renewals closures between December 3, 2024, and March 6, 2025, trains will divert over the Verbindungsbahn (Holstenstraße – Sternschanze – Dammtor) from 21:00 until the end of the service.
