Ryder Cup 2016 Wildcard Picks Unveiled
Europe's Captain Chooses Westwood, Kaymer, and Peters
Europe's Killer Combination
With Team USA set to finalize their roster on September 25th, Europe announced their wildcard picks on Tuesday. Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, and Thomas Pieters will join the nine qualifiers who topped the European tables to form the European team for the Ryder Cup, starting on September 30th at Hazeltine.
The addition of two experienced players, Westwood and Kaymer, was expected, given that the European team already boasted five rookies. "The process of selecting these three wildcards was quite challenging, but I was seeking experience," said Europa-Captain Darren Clarke to reporters. "With Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, I have two former World Number 1s to thank for that."
Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald were initially considered, but they found themselves unable to offer the required experience or were not in peak form. The fates of Thomas Peters and Russell Knox hung in the balance, and Clarke admitted that his call to Russell was one of the hardest he'd ever had to make. "Considering his form, I couldn't rule Thomas out," Clarke said.
Westwood, 43, has been a regular in the Ryder Cup since 1997 and has amassed 23 points during that time. He went unbeaten in 2004 and 2006 and broke Arnold Palmer's record for an undefeated streak at Valhalla in 2008. "I'm very proud," said the legendary player. "The Ryder Cup has provided some of my most special moments in golf."
He went on to express his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to represent Europe once again, stating that it would be a tough challenge but that the combination of experienced and young players was perfect.
As for Kaymer, the two-time Major Champion, his 2012 performance at Medina, where he sealed the victory with a crucial putt, will never be forgotten. Kaymer, who debuted in 2010, welcomed the chance to contribute to another European victory. "When I debuted in this tournament, it was incredibly overwhelming," Kaymer said. "2012 was a special year for me, as I really learned what the Ryder Cup was all about. I don't want to miss 2016, and I'm grateful for Darren's trust in me."
Newcomer Thomas Pieters, who finished 4th at the Olympics and 2nd at the Czech Masters, impressed Clarke with his performances. "I was really impressed by Thomas' form," Clarke said. "I watched him play at the Made in Denmark Championship last week and was impressed by his performance. He will be a valuable addition to the team."
The team will also include Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, and Number 1-ranked player in the world. The Ryder Cup will take place for the first time at the Hazeltine National in Minnesota, with games starting on September 30th. The opening two days will showcase Foursomes and Fourball matches, while twelve individual matches will decide the overall winner on the final day.
