Two top tennis stars from CIS countries, Diana Shnaider from Russia (currently 12th globally) and Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan (11th), recently wrapped up their stint at the esteemed grass tournament WTA-500 in London, exiting in the quarterfinals.
Shnaider faced a heart-wrenching defeat against American Madison Kize (8th in the world), losing 6:2, 3:6, 4:6. Shnaider initially played with unstoppable confidence, clinching the first set 6:2. However, Kize manifested a remarkable turnaround in the second set, snatching the lead (3:6). The third set proved to be an intense battle, with Shnaider requiring a medical timeout due to issues with her left toe. Yet, the breather didn't seem to help, and Kize emerged victorious – the final score being 4:6.
To everyone's surprise, former Wimbledon winner (2022) Elena Rybakina suffered a challenging loss against 86th-ranked player Tatjana Maria. The German player displayed extraordinary consistency throughout the tournament, bagging four consecutive wins and effectively neutralizing Rybakina's powerful serve. As a result, Maria triumphed in two sets, 4:6, 6:7.
Following their London setbacks, both tennis stars will be redoubling their efforts in preparation for Wimbledon. Shnaider, in particular, needs to recover from her injury and regain her top form before the main summer tournament.
