The Cinema Highlights in March - Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary Takes Sci-Fi to New Heights in 2026

A new sci-fi thriller, Project Hail Mary, is set to hit cinemas on March 20, 2026. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film stars Ryan Gosling as an astronaut who wakes up aboard a spaceship with no memory of his mission. Based on Andy Weir's bestselling novel, the story follows his desperate fight to save humanity.

The project marks another high-profile adaptation of Weir's work, following the success of The Martian in 2015. Studios have raced to secure rights to his books, with Project Hail Mary landing a seven-figure deal even before its 2021 release.

The film centres on Gosling's character, who regains consciousness aboard a spacecraft with no recollection of who he is or why he's there. His struggle to piece together his mission becomes a race against time, as he uncovers clues that could determine humanity's survival. The plot may include an unexpected encounter that shifts the course of his journey.

Project Hail Mary is part of a wave of Weir adaptations following The Martian, which grossed over $630 million worldwide. MGM (now Amazon MGM Studios) acquired the rights to Project Hail Mary more than a year before the novel's publication. Meanwhile, Artemis, another of Weir's books, remains in development at 20th Century Studios, though challenges like simulating moon gravity have slowed progress.

The film arrives amid a busy month for sci-fi releases. On March 5, The Bride! Long Live the Bride premieres, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Jessie Buckley as the Bride, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Penélope Cruz. Later, on March 12, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die debuts, with Sam Rockwell playing a time traveller recruiting volunteers to battle a rogue AI.

Gore Verbinski's The Astronaut, also starring Gosling, offers a different take on sci-fi. Set in the 1930s and inspired by Bonnie & Clyde, it reimagines the Frankenstein story with Gosling as a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory. The cast includes Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Asim Chaudhry, and Juno Temple.

Project Hail Mary continues the trend of big-budget adaptations from Weir's novels. With Gosling in the lead and a proven creative team behind it, the film aims to deliver another gripping space adventure. Its release follows years of anticipation since the book's publication and the studio's early investment in the project.
