Russia's 'Spring Swallow' ski jumping event unites young athletes from three nations
The all-Russian 'Spring Swallow' ski jumping competition for young athletes has begun in Nizhny Novgorod. Around 100 boys and girls aged 12 to 17 from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan are taking part. Officials including Sports Minister Dmitry Kabaylo attended the opening ceremony to welcome the participants.
The event marks another year of growing international involvement in Russian youth ski jumping. Over the past five years, participation from Belarusian and Kazakh athletes has steadily increased. Since 2022, bilateral agreements have boosted numbers, with Belarusian entries rising by 20–30% annually. For example, 45 Belarusian juniors competed in the 2024 Russian Youth Championships in Chussovoi, while Kazakh participation climbed from 12 to 28 athletes.
To support training, Nizhny Novgorod recently built a new dry-land facility for ski jumpers. The project, backed by the regional parliament, helps young athletes improve their physical conditioning outside winter months. Maxim Rebrov, head of the regional government's executive office, joined Kabaylo in officially opening the competition.
The competition runs with expanded regional and international representation. The new training ground in Nizhny Novgorod will continue to aid athlete development between seasons. Organisers expect the event to strengthen ties between participating countries in youth winter sports.
